Sonny bill williamss boxing opponent in jail

A federal judge sentenced a middleweight boxing ring judge to jail for two years Tuesday in a case that prosecutors say involved bribery, threats, theft and threats of violence against the opponent, who was in his early 20s.

William J. Smith III, 50, was sentenced to two years in federal prison by U.S. District Judge David L. Leipold, who described the crime as a "significant event of serious consequence."

Smith also admitted to accepting $350,000 from Conner after agreeing to give the purse bidding information, and he also claimed to be in the pocket of Conner when they met for dinner at a Hollywood hotel in 2012, the report said.

A few months before the 2015 purse auction, Smith, now 54, said in a recorded audio recorded on a cellphone that he knew Conner had told his wife about allegations that the two of them had paid off at least $20 million in personal debt and mortgage obligations for Conner.

But in the recordings Smith and Conner have said they were joking and were never planning to pay off the debt to the mobster.

"We're all laughing about it," Smith said, according to the court documents.

A month before the 2014 purse auction Smith had agreed to pay $200,000 to an undercover agent posing as a ring instructor. The undercover informant was later fired, but the charges against him were eventually dismissed in March 2015.

Prosecutors said Conner also conspired with a former customer to arrange to buy five boxing rings, but never received payment from them and did not attend court hearings to testify against Smith.

Conner also denied taking cash payments from Smith. Conner, who has been in court since Sept. 27, said that since his arrest last year, the evidence has not been consistent.

State Sen. Gary Johnson (R-St. Joseph) said Wednesday he is meeting with Gov. Charlie Baker about banning commercial brewers from supplying beer to residents of Garden Grove.

After a meeting with the governor Tuesday night, Johnson said Baker and other business owners were looking into ways to increase competition in the market to protect small and artisan brewers and make craft beer safer for children.

Johnson said he is worried about his employees and that some of them are getting sick.

Baker responded to Johnson's comments Thursday morning.

"It's just really shocking," Baker said, referring to the reports about Johnson's health issues. "I just think it's very concerning that something this important happens for someone just like Mr. Johnson."

Baker also said Johnson should have heard the industry's concerns when he signed the bill into law last year.

"I'll always continue to advocate for and stand up to those that would try to restrict who has the right to grow beer in their garden, and what they can grow, and how," Baker said. "It was a great law, but it is not up to me. I think the governor is very thoughtful, very thoughtful about what's happening, and hopefully he'll understand that the beer industry wants to grow and wants to give back and that he'll encourage us to work together to make this work."
